Now Leaving on Track 7!

The steam locomotive had a huge influence on the growth of our country. While relegated to museums or short excursions steamers still holds a place in the hearts of young and old alike.
A great site dedicated to the steam locomotive is:
Steam Locomotive dot Com

The following site has locomotive rosters to nearly every railroad line in country. Also plenty of photos.

True cable cars survive only in San Francisco CA, and have been traveling the hills there since 1873. Before the cable car there was no alternative in the city by the bay for horses could not haul cars up the steep hills. Other cities adopted cable cars and the golden era for the cable car lasted from about 1880 to 1890. Then with the development of combustion and electric engines the cable cars were abandoned due to high costs involved of building and maintaining cable car lines.
Mainly because of love for the little cars on rail, 40 cars still operate and are maintained, rebuilt and replaced as a part of the National Park Service.
A fine web site devoted to cable cars is:
The Cable Car Home Page
