From MM
Dear Snugs,
How many series have there been that feature the character of Dick Tracy and were any of them original stories and not reprints of the newspaper strips?
MM,
OUCH! That is really a tall order, but here goes (I'll at least hit the high spots).
Dick Tracy was created by Chester Gould and began as a newspaper strip on October 12, 1931. His first comic book appearance under his own name (there were 4 issues of Feature Book that had Tracy reprint material from McKay Publications) Large Feature Comic #1 in 1939 published by Dell. Overstreet lists 17 Large Feature or 4-Color appearances from Dell before they got down to business and began Dick Tracy Monthly in 1948, which ran for 24 issues. From there, Tracy popped over to Harvey and continued with the same numbering until #145 in 1961. After that, there were 4 different series from Blackthorne in 1986-1989: Dick Tracy Monthly/Weekly (99 issues), Dick Tracy Special (3 issues), Dick Tracy: The Early Years (4 trade paperback) and Dick Tracy Unprinted Stories (4 issues). Disney also hopped into the fray with a 3 issue series that adapted the movie in 1990 and Gladstone did a series of albums in the late 90s. Along the way there were also a host of specials, giveaways and odds and ends, including an oversized tabloid from DC.
As to original stories:  To the best of my knowledge, except for covers, the occasional spot drawing or the movie adaptation, nobody has published any original Tracy adventures that were not reprints of the newspaper strip.
