We talk about movie a lot here on the Nostalgia League. What was the name of the first theatre in the United States, where was it located and what year did it open? For an extra bag of pop corn what was the admission?Crimson Collector (4/26/03 4:48 am)

Doing a bit of research...On July 26, 1896, the first permanent home for showing movies in the United States was opened at 623 Canal Street, corner of Exchange Alley. The name of the theatre was Vitascope Hall. Cost for admission was 10 cents.KanSmiley (4/26/03 8:25 am)
CC: You are right on the money. As a side note for an extra dime the patron could go to the projection booth and watch the movie being shown AND for another dime the owner would give a customer one frame of film as a remembrance of the experience.

An important tidbit of information was left out. What city are we talking about?
Crimson Collector (4/26/03 11:42 am)NEW ORLEANS?
KanSmiley (4/26/03 3:29 pm)Oh Tony of the sharp eye. Yes New Orleans is the correct city. I was reading everything else and didn't notice CC had not listed the city.

For an extra dime you could date the projectionist's daughter..........maybe?
KanSmiley (4/26/03 4:01 pm)CC: I think the article said you could date the daughter for a quarter but then that is another story for a different board.
