In the 50s "Thing From Another World" a supporting actor went on to be a pioneer tv director of one of the most famous daytime soap operas on one of the three networks... can you name him? Now this one should be a bit tougher...jadm (3/14/03 11:06 am)
This question was never answered.....PROFESSOR TNL (3/14/03 11:57 am)
The Soap Opera that he went on to direct for many years was General Hospital and the actor turned director was James R. Young who played Lt. Eddie Dykes.Diduseeimfly (3/14/03 1:29 pm)
Another supporting actor in "The Thing" became pretty famous for his supporting role in radio and tv. Both shows had the same name where he took a lot of jibes and wisecracks from the star of the show. Who was the supporting actor, the star of the show, and name of the show?jadm (3/14/03 1:51 pm)
George Fenniman...Groucho Marx..."Ypu Bet Your Life."jadm (3/14/03 1:57 pm)
That should read "Fenneman" and "You."Harry Weston (3/14/03 2:40 pm)
How can we leave out who was in the Thing's suit??SQ4 (3/14/03 3:29 pm)
Easy, James Arness - what a great movie. I saw it many times on late night and midday movies while I was studying at School & University. But only the heavily censored versions. I knew that James Arness was in the movie but I could never find him (censorship seemed to include any vision of the Thing) - it wasn't until many years later that I read that he was the actual Thing (in his first movie role). I recently imported The Thing on VHS (here, to Australia) just so I could finally see an uncut version. Has anyone noticed that there was a lot of incidental talking in the movie (other conversations going on in earshot while the main dialog is being played out)? I can't recall ever seeing this occur in any other movie. In most movies we see all attending actors neither moving nor (incidental) speaking lest we miss the important words of the speaking actor. Again a great movie - is it coming to DVD ?Crimson Collector (3/14/03 4:20 pm)
I love the Director of this film, Howard Hawk's comment when they were having a hard time coming up with a concept design for "THE THING"... when it got difficult, he threw up his hands and said: "to hell with it, just give me Frankenstein!"Barcroft (3/14/03 6:08 pm) Reply

I know that Hawks directed 'The Thing', but what was the reason for giving Christian Nyby directorial credit other than Membership in the Directors Guild?
Was it ever explained why Hawks never took credit for himself. I've never seen anything in print where he explained his reasons.

Howard Hawks actually directed "The Thing" but gave the credit to Christian Nyby as a "favor". Nyby had been an editor on a film or two of his and he gifted him with the director's credit on the film. In viewing the film, there is no way to mistake the style of Hawk's direction.Barcroft (3/14/03 6:32 pm)

Thanks for the info!

You must have seen a lot of Howard Hawks' movies of the 30's and 40's; Scarface, 20th Century, Only Angels Have Wings, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, to name just a few of his movies. All these and others are classic "in your face everybody talk at once get your attention movies." Hawks was the master of the frantic movies. All great stuff.
