Can anyone name the two frequent serial henchmen (especially in Sam Katzman Columbias) who both went on to land recurring roles on two popular 1950s cop shows?DrTobor1 (2/27/03 2:08 pm)
Jerry,
This is where having a faulty memory from battling serial heroes like yourself often lets me down. I know one of Sam Katzman's "regulars" that went on to become a lawman was Marshall Reed; although the name of the series is missing from my aforementioned memory. I *THINK* another frequent henchman in Columbia serials that went on to play a lawman might have been Don C. Harvey, though once again the show's title escapes me. At least maybe this info will "jar" some others memories to complete this list?
I believe that Marshall Reed was a cast member in the tv series that was known by 2 names at one time or another. The show's title being: San Francisco Beat and The Line-up, starring Warner Anderson & Tom Tully.
One could have been the original title when it was 1st run, the other could have been the re-run syndicated title. I haven't seen an episode of this tv show for years.
I do remember that Warner Anderson & Tom Tully drove around in a black 1950 or 1951 Ford 4 door sedan. That style of car always looked like a small rocket ship to me. I always enjoyed that show. Oh for those days of yesteryear.
Sincerely:
Ron McKnight.
Yes, Marshall Reed was indeed a regular on THE LINEUP, with Warner Anderson and Tom Tully. To the best of my knowledge, Dr., Don Harvey didn't appear on any cop shows, but I could be wrong. At any rate, he's not the guy I was thinking of. Anyone know who No. 2 is?Jerry Blake Operator 99 (3/1/03 9:11 am)
The answer is Terry Frost, who was a regular on MATTHEWS: HIGHWAY PATROL with Broderick Crawford.DrTobor1 (3/1/03 3:34 pm)
You may be right about Harvey, Jerry. As I mentioned, my brain is too badly battered from fighting all you serial heroes. Now that the name is out, I do recall THE LINEUP, and Reed being a good guy. I had forgotten all about Terry Frost.
Speaking of bad guys becoming good guys, a one-time serial hero (he was usually the villain most of the time) appeared as a semi-regular as a next door neighbor to a well-known family. The next door neighbor was an insurance salesman, if memory isn't too damaged. Can you tell me the actor's name (remember, a giveaway here is he was a serial hero only once) and which show he appeared as a semi-regular in on TV? It was a sitcom.
Lyle Talbot? He was the Nelsons' next door neighbor on OZZIE AND HARRIET.DrTobor1 (3/3/03 6:39 am)
Actually, you're dead on in one respect. Lyle Talbot played the title lead role in CHICK CARTER, DETECTIVE for Columbia Pictures. But I had another former villain in mind, and another sitcom. He was also a semi-regular on another sitcom. Any new guesses? Come on, guys, think back. This sitcom had a former bigscreen star and made him into a television icon. And one of our serial villains (who was a hero only once) appeared periodically as his neighbor, an insurance salesman. I'm surprised the Crimson Collector hasn't already written this one. He's a walking encyclopedia of this type of information. LOL.Crimson Collector (3/3/03 8:12 am)
Dr. Tobor, could you be thinking of Talbot's appearances on "Love That Bob" that starred Bob Cummings? And that show also made a tv regular of Anne B. Davis who went on in later years to costar in "The Brady Bunch."Barcroft (3/4/03 10:08 am)
Jerry:
How about adding Myron Healy and Dennis Moore. Both of these western bad guys although Dennis Mooore had his share of good guy roles had semi-regular roles on The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp with Hugh O'Brian during the 50's. Healy play Doc Holliday for awhile, but the character name Dennis Moore used escapes me.
Barcroft
Dr. T, is the answer Tristram Coffin? He was a semi-regular on I LOVE LUCY and a regular on the short-lived MEET CORLISS ARCHER.
I was aware Myron Healey appeared on WYATT EARP, Barcroft, but I didn't know Dennis Moore did. What role did he play? I'd be interested in finding out.
Jerry:
I've checked a couple of source books but find no reference to Dennis Moore in Wyatt Earp. But I remember seeing him on the show possibly playing one of Earps Deputys. I'll keep looking

Since we are now talking about Wyatt Earp I have a question. What very famous b-western film star had a role in that series one season? No, Jerry, I am not thinking of Trevor Bardette. LOL SmileyJerry Blake Operator 99 (3/5/03 1:21 pm)
Smiley--is the answer Bob Steele?KanSmiley (3/5/03 1:51 pm)
I was not thinking of Bob Steele. In his starring roles he wore all black. SmileyTony Bolton (3/5/03 2:06 pm)
Gotta be Lash LaRue.KanSmiley (3/5/03 3:00 pm)
You got it Tony: In the 1959 season of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WYATT EARP Lash LaRue played "Sheriff Johnny Behan". And, for Jerry, Trevor Bardette played "Old Man Clanton" in the 1959 thru 1961 seasons. SmileyBarcroft (3/5/03 6:29 pm)
Barcroft must have had a severe "Brain Fart" about this one. If I were a betting man I would have bet the house on Dennis Moore being a regular on Wyatt Earp. I've looked high and low and found absolutely nothing stating he ever appeared on the show. The IMDB lists every TV Show he appeared in and Wyatt Earp was not one of them. Sorry for the Bad Info!!!!
Barcroft
Barcroft: I have several books on early TV and no where could I find any reference to Dennis Moore being on Wyatt Earp. SmileyDrTobor1 (3/7/03 8:09 am)
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back guys. But my spaceship ran out of fuel, and I've been drifting in space before I could get one of my henchmen to give me a refill.
Jerry Blake, Operator 99, wins with 'KING OF THE ROCKETMEN' star Tristram Coffin. But in addition to the two shows Jerry mentioned, he also appeared as a semi-regular in a few shows of FATHER KNOWS BEST as Robert Young's neighbor, who also sold insurance.
