The Durango Kid
Charles Starrett had to have one of the longest running careers playing the Durango Kid for Columbia pictures. Can you name how many films were in that series?

Professor TNL:
Based on my trusty "Shoot-em-ups" by Les Adams & Buck Rainey their are 59 Durango Kid Movies starting with The Return of the Durango Kid released 4/19/45 and ending with The Kid from Broken Gun released 8/15/52. I did not count the Original Durango Kid released 8/23/40 as this is a stand alone film, and most writers don't include it with the later movies because they have nothing to do with the original.

Barcroft - I guess I'm going to have to get Shoot "em Ups. Several fellows have recommended it to me as the definitive b western book. I thought there were 65 DK movies made. That is counting the first one. Smiley

KanSmiley:
If you do order "Shoot-em-ups", also order the Addendum that was published a few years after the original book was published. Buck Rainey had mentioned somewhere either in the Big Reel or another periodical that their were some omissions and the Addendum was issued to list the missing movies. Did he possibly miss a couple of Durango Kid Movies? Hence the Addendum.

I agree with Kan Smiley.........I count 65 with the inclusion of the first Durango Kid.

I know I made around 56 with Starrett. There had been several made and they didn't do as well as the studio wanted. So they brought me in to bolster the audience. We were sitting under a tree one afternoon between scenes and I told him that the reason I was there was to help him out. Of course, he didn't take too kindly to that and there were times we didn't get along but that series made both of us a lot of money. The Durango Kid movies were second only to the Hoppy series in the number of films made. Smiley

Charles Starrett and the Durango Kid series was also one of Dr. Tobor's favorite western heroes. Not only did he do the Durango Kid westerns, but he made a *LOT* of non-Durango Kid westerns, and I remember many of those westerns also being quite good. The pity of all this is many of those films---and many in the DK titles as well---simply are NOT available. The Westerns channel has aired only two or three title of the DK series that had been unavailable, but there are still many more that cannot be accounted for.
