A Truly Comic Strip
From 1935-73 there was an offbeat weekly comic feature about an amusing fireman. Can you name that fireman and tell us some of the odd messages that often appeared in strange places in the backgrounds?

I think you refer to "Smokey Stover." Ham gravy ain't wavy.

Good work! Now who was the artist? And how about a couple of the singular phrases? They were repeated frequently, though they made no sense.

The artist was Holman. In addition to "Ham gravy ain't wavy," all I can recall now is "notary sojac" and the ever-popular "foo."

You remembered the two biggies! Another frequently appearing odd one was "1506 nix-nix."
