What was the title of the absolutely horrible "live" tv western done by one of the three big networks in the 50s? Who played the hero's in this short series? There were three of them.........PROFESSOR TNL (9/7/02 10:43 am)
Here is one hint.......in this very short lived series, there were three "Marshals" and one of them was a famous sidekick of a western cowboy legend.PROFESSOR TNL (9/17/02 8:25 am)
Since this one seems to have not awakened any memories in anyone, the answer is the ABC-TV live-action western "THE MARSHALL OF GUNSITE PASS." It had a short life of only about one season.
Cast (in credits order)

rest of cast listed alphabetically
Eddie Dean .... Marshal #2
Russell Hayden .... Marshal #1

Action in the Afternoon 1953 on CBS and The Gabby Hayes show 1950 were live shows. I hesitate to correct the good professor but the correct title is "The Marshal of Gunsight Pass" from 1950. It bombed out after about 5 months as noted by the Prof.jadm (9/17/02 11:38 am)
My recollection is that ACTION IN THE AFTERNOON was the first live NATIONALLY broadcast western, coming from the WCAU studios in Philadelphia. It starred Jack Valentine and Blake Ritter, with an occasional appearance, also, if memory serves, by then local announcer, Ed McMahon. How well I remember tuning in after school (about 4 o'clock, I think), and hearing the sound of an airplane engine as it flew over the supposed frontier street of the City Line "backlot." Also, whenever the show's actors completed the script in less than the allotted 30 minutes, the flustered ensemble would eventually think to save themselves by calling to Jack, "Hey, now that you've taken care of that varmint, how about a song?" Perfectly logical...doesn't every resolved catastrophe prompt those involved to want to hear a song....? The singing would continue until the director finally got his watch fixed.PROFESSOR TNL (9/17/02 12:47 pm)
I stand corrected. The correct title actually is MARSHAL OF GUNSIGHT PASS Tony is right there. One funny story about "Marshal" is that the boom operator on the show was late to the crew call and when questioned by the technical director on why he was late, he responded with the answer that it was raining and the back and forth motion of his windshield wipers had mesmerized him.Prof Seldin (9/18/02 8:37 am)
4 pm is correct. In addition to hearing planes, you could also see cars on City Line Avenue. I have a kinoscope ( I believe the only one available) that shows all the main players - A complete show. The actors oftern seem out of breath because they had to run from the outside back in the studio with no commercial breaks. I have heard of "Marshal............' but that is about it. Are any of shows available?Tony Bolton (9/18/02 10:34 am) Reply Tapes
