Well, I do know that Rufe Davis was also put on the show along with Smiley Burnette as another engineer...but outside of him, I cannot think of anyone else who might have tried to join the cast.......

No, Tom, John Carroll is incorrect. More hints: Early on he was known as a singing cowboy. During his career he made all sorts of movies: Universal horror, comedies with Abbott and Costello, dramas with Huphrey Bogart and musicals with Harry James and the Andrew Sisters. Smiley
