In Yakima Canutt's book, STUNT MAN, there is mention of a black cowboy, Bill PICKETT (with an "i"), who eventually worked for the "101 Ranch Show. Some of the stars who came from that show were Tom Mix,Hoot Gibson, Buck Jones, Yakima Canutt, Ken Maynard and Jack Hoxie.

Puckett was a typo. William M. "Bill "Pickett is right. He was known as "The Dusky Demon," and like many of his colleagues, he was a hand on the ranch itself. The full title was Miller Brothers' 101 Ranch Wild West Show. In addition to Mix, Jones, and others, a silent movie star named Mabel Normand also worked in the show. Do you know where the ranch was?
