Al Jolson was billed as the greatest entertainer of his time and it is hard to refute that but I would have to say Fred Astaire may have been the most talented one of the 20th century.
Jolson's radio shows from the late 40's truly show a performer who clearly dominates every other performer he apppears with the exception of Bing Crosby.
Fred Astaire had a great career on Broadway, took dance to a new level on the screen and television, and was a good singer that sang every song perfectly.
Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra also come to mind but Jolson and Astaire were the cream of the crop in book.
I don't have any strong opinions about this myself but growing up I'd always see this title given to Sammy Davis Jr.
He fits into a lot of the categories you mentioned.
Well, guys, that title, along with MAN OF THE CENTURY title for the 20th century, has been given to Elvis Presley by some. Personally, I liked Presley, but I don't think he was the GREATEST entertainer around. As Tony pointed out, he just couldn't hoof it like Astaire could. Sammy Davis, Jr. was often called "Mr. Entertainment" but I seem to recall others being billed the same or similar ways. Who knows?
Tony Bolton (4/7/03 1:31 pm)Michael Jackson could have one of the all time greats but his self-indulgent and personality defects that have gathered since his Thriller years have sadly destroyed his chances, now he may be the all time screw-uped star, surpassing a many.
Barcroft (4/11/03 1:19 pm)Tony:
To add insult to injury Mr. Jackson and Fox have hooked up to present another Fox Spectacular: 2 hours of his home movies. Rest assured Barcroft will tape this baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Not!!!!!!!!!!
