The Quiz-Show Scandal

Diduseeimfly (3/27/03 4:54 pm)

This is for you historians and tv buffs out there. Any of you remember the quiz show "Twenty One?" This show enthralled millions of watchers every week (including me). Everybody watched the battle between Herb Stempel, and Charles Van Doren, a Columbia University english teacher, and son of a Pulitzer Prize winner. In late 1956 the two waged a battle for three or four weeks each time tying the money amount at the end of the week's show which necessitated a quiz-off the following week. Finally. In December of 1956, Van Doren won on a stumble by Stempel on a movie question. Van Doren won $129,000.
Years later. It was found that this quiz show and others like it ($64,000 Question) were all a fraud. The producers of the show provided the answers to each contestant and told them who would win and who should lose. It was a disgruntled Herb Stempel who blew the whistle on the show. He was irked that he had to lose on a question of his favorite movie, Marty. This caused a national scandal and the fall of the quiz shows.
In the following days I'll post the questions from that famous show. I will post the answers after I have posted all twelve questions. See if you can answer them. I got all of one right.

Diduseeimfly (3/27/03 4:58 pm)

The first four questions of twelve:
1) World War II.
Lake Lagoda played a large part in a particular phase of WWII. Name the two countries whose troops opposed each other at Lake Lagoda.
2) Medicine.
The necessity for cleanliness and sterilization was not realized until the middle of the 19th century. What is the name of surgeon who introduced sterilization into the operating room?
3) Fashions.
What synthetic fiber has almost replaced silk in women's stockings?
4) Founding Fathers.
One of the first American statesmen to protest taxation by the British was a man from Massachusetts who said, "Taxation without representation is tyranny." Name him.

Purple Monster (3/27/03 7:50 pm)

OK Here goes....
1)Lake Lagoda was fought over by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union
2)Joseph Lister was the surgeon who discovered the need for sterilization.
3)The synthetic fiber is nylon. Could this be how ladies stockings came to be called NYLONS?
4) James Otis was the Patriot who uttered these words. If any of these are wrong, I apologize, if not I'll take the new min-van that the lovely Carol Merril is standing in front of.

There was a very interesting and entertaining movie made in 1994 about the quiz show scandals of the 50's. QUIZ SHOW followed very closely the collapse of these popular TV shows. A couple of years before that, Public TV had a ninty minute show on the quiz show scandals. The actual participants were interviewed and recounted how the scandals had affected their particular lives. Smiley

Diduseeimfly (3/28/03 8:17 am) Reply Next Four Questions.

Pretty good Purple Monster, three out of four...
Here's the next four questions:
5) Churchill.
Winston Churchill wrote a series of six brilliant books chronicling the events leading up to and including WWII. I want you name any three of them.
6) Queens.
The wife of King Ahab was a cruel and willful woman; she favored the idolatrous worship of Baal and persecuted the prophets of Jehovah. What was her name and what country did she rule?
7) The Civil War.
Because of a disagreement with his commanding general, Ulysses Grant was virtually placed under arrest for a brief time early in 1862. Who was the commanding general of the Union army at that time?
[8)] Boxing.
Name the three heavyweight champions immediately preceding Joe Louis.

KanSmiley (3/28/03 10:25 am)

I do not know the answer to any of the Churchill books.
The wife King Ahab was Jezebel.
I think the Commanding General of the Union Army at this time was Maj.-Gen Halleck. I know that Grant was forced to serve under him for awhile and was very unhappy about that.
The boxing chapions prior to Joe Louis is Primo Carnera - Max Baer - and James J. Braddock.

KanSmiley (3/29/03 7:11 am)

Pizarro conquered Peru. Atahualpa was the head of Peru at the time.
Do not know the answer about Joseph Medill
Henry VIII wives: 1) Catherine of Aragon - marriage ended in annulment; 2) Anne Boleyn was beheaded for adultery; 3) Jane Seymour died after childbirth; 4) Anne of Cleves had marriage dissolved; 5) Kathryn Howard was executed for adultery (interesting to note that Kathryn Howard and Anne Boleyn, both executed for adultery were first cousins) and 6) Katherine Parr died after childbirth (Also interesting that he was married to three different women with the names of Catherine and each had a different spelling).

I have a question. I see that Joseph LISTER is the doctor who introducted sterilization into the operating room. Would there be any connection between Joseph LISTER and the product we call LISTERINE today?

Stan (3/31/03 10:37 am)

And the water bag from which military units drink is know as a lister bag.

Diduseeimfly (3/31/03 1:10 pm)

I really had to do some research on this one. It seems there are more promotions for Listerine than there are about it's origin.
"Listerine," was developed by Dr. John Lawrence in 1879. His formula was developed after the experiments of Louis Pasteur and John Lister. The only connection to Lister, is that it was named after him.
Dr. Lawrence sold his formula to a Jordan Wheat Lambert, who promoted the product. He is the Lambert of Warner-Lambert. name.
