Today, my "new" Roy Rogers double-feature DVD from VCI arrived. I bought mostly for feature #2, THE BELLS OF SAN ANGELO, which is one of Roy's better outdoor color films.
However, when I viewed TBOSA, I was quite disappointed to find this print is extremely "choppy", i.e. you can tell it was cut and spliced quite easily in several places. Also, in more than one scene--I counted 4, and I may have missed one or two--the picture goes from the rich Trucolor to pure B&W for long enough for it to be noticeable and quite agitating. [:evil] I have an older VHS print of this fine RR picture that is in MUCH better shape than this latest VCI project. I am returning it to VCI for a complete refund tomorrow. This one, as far as I'm concerned, is way below the standards of their recent excellent serial releases of JUNGLE JIM and SECRET AGENT X-9. In fact, knowing that VCI insists on NOT RELEASING anything on VCI unless they have a really good print, makes this an even bigger disappointment.
You can choose to do as you will with this Roy Rogers double feature DVD; but I'm posting this so that buyer beware! Don't expect the best possible print in this one.
Sorry to hear that the quality of this DVD is not up to the usual high standards of VCI. I was looking forward to this one, but do try to avoid poor quality products whether from they come from VCI or the usual sources of video garbage such as Madacy, Whirlwind or AlphaVideo (Oldies.Com).The Lightning (1/21/03 3:31 pm)
However, I found the print of UNDER CALIFORNIA STARS far superior to any prints I have seen on VHS. I had an original 16mm color print of this title from Nostalgia Merchant, and this print is just as good as that 16mm. print. I wonder if that is what they used.DrTobor1 (1/27/03 10:17 am)
Yes, I did look at UCS after I viewed BELLS OF SAN ANGELO, and it did turn out to be a very good and clean print. And that's probably why VCI gave that print "top billing" on the package. But I'm so mad at that BOSA print I still want my money back. ;>)
Speak of THE NOSTALGIA MERCHANT. I got my original BELLS OF SAN ANGELO print from them, and it is quite pretty, and not nearly as choppy as this travesty from VCI. Besides, BOSA, IMHO, is a much better movie than UCS.
