You Can't Tell a Book...(2)

by its cover, or at least that's how the old adage goes. It's also true, however, that you can't tell a book by its title, author, or recommendation. Presented here, is another selection of book covers for books that just didn't deliver what was promised-at least in one collector's opinion.
4 from Planet 5 by Murray Leinster
Leinster is one of my favorite authors, but his work varies in quality, particularly in the 60s.
Gold Medal, a division of Fawcett 1964
2nd Printing
Forrest J. Ackerman's World of Science Fiction
When you collect books, people think you need more books, so here's a hardcover I received. It tries to cover everything, so, except for the pictures, there's not much content at all.
General Publishing Group 1997
The Alley God by Philip Jose Farmer
Farmer is a great author, but only when he is on top of his game. These 3 short novels aren't his best.
Sphere (England) 1972
The Mars Monopoly by Jerry Sohl
Worries about being controlled were big in the 50s. Cool cover, though. One side of an ACE Double.
Ace 1956
The Man Who Lived Forever
The other half of the double and the cover was the reason I bought this one. It didn't pan out. *Sigh!*
In 1956, Ace is listed as a division of A.A. Wynn, Inc.
Warrior of Llarn by Gardner Fox
Far as I can tell, this is Frazetta's first cover work. Much as I enjoy Fox's comic work, I didn't warm to his prose.
Ace 1964
The Iron King by Maurice Druon
Another recommendation by a friend. Badly translated from the original French and made boring as a result.
Ace 1956
Enter the Lion by Hodel and Wright
A well written Sherlock Holmes pastiche, but I've just grown tired of Holmes, so....adios!
Playboy Press 1980
Judgment Night by C. L. Moore
C. L. Moore had great concepts, but always seemed in need of an editor to reign her in. This is a short story collection.
Dell 1979
Murder by the Numbers by Max Allan Collins
When Collins is another author whose work ranges from excellent to passable. This, one of his Elliot Ness novels, is the latter.
St. Martin's Press 1993
Tarzan and the Valley of Gold by Fritz Leiber
An adaption of the film and an attempt to produce new Tarzan novels (notice the number in the upper right corner). Leiber did not understand Burroughs in any way, shape, or form.
Ballantine 1966
The Wailing Asteroid by Murray Leinster
Another only passable effort by Leinster. Back cover mentions that the novel was made into an embassy Pictures release, The Terrornauts
Avon 3rd 1966
