     Again, one must ask what Avon was trying to sell with its covers. What this cover has to do with the book is an unknown quantity. They were on to something, however, since Avon paperbacks were excellent sellers.
     The Metal Monsters was originally published in 1920 and, if this type of older fiction is of interest, it is one of Merritt's better efforts.
     The D. A. Wollheim quoted on the cover is editor and author Donald A. Wollheim, who went on to become the editor of Ace book during its most fertile period and later founded his own paperback publishing house, DAW books.
