Gulliver of Mars
Edwin L. Arnold
Ace Books
2nd (?) US Printing

When Arnold's book was released by Ace in 1964, it created a large stir in the science fiction community, as it was the first opportunity for many fans to read the alleged source for Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars. I, for one, believe that this is not the case, and, that it is quite interesting that this book has developed a reputation only as a source and not for its own merits, of which there are many (personally, I think that the work is an allegory for the decaying English empire of the late 1800s). The book has a romantic quality to it that is no longer evident in literature and deserves a reading just to get back in touch with the style of an earlier time.
For whatever reason you decide to read the book, you are invited to pop on over to The Bookshelf, where both books are available and there you may draw your own conclusions.
The cover to this book is an early effort by Frank Frazetta, which some sources credit as his first for Ace. Publication dates would seem to prove this false, but it is possible that the painting for the cover could have been bought, but not used until other covers had been published.
Deciding which edition number to assign to this book is also a problem. The 5 digit string of numbers in the Ace logo suggest that this is a first printing, but it is known that the first printing was from an earlier Ace series ("F" series I believe). The 5 digit numbering was from the late 60s and was not consistent.
