Avon Fantasy Reader No. 15 Edited by Donald A. Wollheim Avon Novels Inc. 1951 1st Printing
Stanley G. Weinbaum was, and is, one of the great early science fiction authors and what he might have accomplished had he not died at the age of 33, can only be imagined. Why Wollheim changed the title of the story from its original, "Flight on Titan", to that featured on the cover is not explained, but this story, coupled with an excellent cover, makes this a great issue.
There is more, however, besides the above mentioned items. Bassett Morgan, Mary Elizabeth Counselman and John Martin Leahy (an especially good story) all contribute forms of horror, while Gilbert Wright, Miles Breuer, Clark Ashton Smith and Wollheim produce the science fiction. Also in this issue, but hard to categorize, are stories by C. M. Kornbluth, P. Schuyler Miller, and a story by Wayne Baring, which is best described as fantasy with elements of science fiction and horror (perchance another "off-trail" story?).
With this issue appearing seven months after the previous number, most readers of the time must have wondered whether the title had been cancelled. Oddly enough, issues 15, 16 and 17 were all released bi-monthly, and then a six month gap occurred before the final issue. |
