Avon Fantasy Reader No. 10 Edited by Donald A. Wollheim Avon Novels Inc. 1949 1st Printing
Now Conan looks like a Roman legionnaire. Ah, those wiley Cimmerians!
Also note that the publisher's name is changed to Avon Novels. No information as to why.
"A Witch Shall Be Born" is one of the best of the Conan stories and features Conan being crucified, yet with enough strength to kill a vulture with his teeth. Great stuff and shows again what made Conan popular. The rest of the issue is no slouch either, with a good cross section of the various genres. Of most interesting note are the stories by Basset Morgan and Malcolm Jameson, whose names are prominent on the cover. Both are nominally sea stories, both walk the line between fantasy and horror, and both authors are barely known today .
The rest of the issue is good, with tales by Amelia Long (another unknown today) Miles Breuer, Francis Flagg, Lovecraft and Wollheim rounding out the issue. |
